Wednesday 28th December – walks ***** Dedham and Mersea Island – sunny
and still :)
With Christmas behind us it was a chance for exercise and perhaps a little
less eating so we arranged to go to Mersea Island to buy a board to replace
my shark attacked Xantos 310!!!

e shark attack:)
We made a flask, made a sandwich, sadly no turkey or duck left:( two pieces
of Christmas cake and left Felixstowe at 10 after clearing the thick frost
off the van! It was a lovely crisp winters day with the sun trying to break
through the mist – beautiful:)
On reaching the A 12 we made a small detour to the River Stour at Dedham
and parked in the car park by the mill pool where you got the first hour
for free:) We were met by Gold Finches and a pool full of gulls and ducks
waiting to be fed. Walked up to the Old Mill flats past the weir and up the
lock to the cottage with everything covered in frost:) Then across the road
and along the banks of the Stour passing many of my old fishing spot as a
boy and with the willows shrouded in misty sunshine. We passed many
dogwalkers and families out enjoying the day and after making a swan fly
off up river, crossed the bridge, half way to Flatford. Sadly, we didn’t
have time to walk any further so we returned to the van and continued on to
Mersea Island.
On the Island, we turned left to East Mersea and parked Cudmore Grove and
had to pay £1.50 for an hour:(

We set off across the grass meadows and cliffs to the beach at the end
overlooking Brightlingsea and Point Clear. With the tide high we walked
along the sand, collecting oyster shells. As the tide retreated the many
waders were making the most of the freshly exposed mud. Back at the van we
headed to West Mersea and parked behind the windsurfing hut and got another
free hour:) While Mag made a cuppa I had a walk over to the beach to take
some pics of the uniform brightly coloured beach huts. There was a
kitesurfer packing up who had a foil board and I had a nice chat with him.
As he made to boards and foils, I asked how much for a fin for a one of my
windsurfing boards? We had our picnic before having a walk around the beach
huts, really lovely and I can’t wait to have another windsurf here:) It
was time to go and see the board I was hoping to buy, the owner had been
called away to look after sick grandchildren so had left the board in his
front garden. The sat-nav took us with a small detour to the board but
sadly it was the wrong Xantos 310, it was the version a year earlier than
the one I want so we left emptyhanded.
We then headed down to the harbour end famous for oyster sheds and house
boats but couldn’t find a space in the small carpark:( There is a spot by
the duck board to the beach for six cars just past the houseboats and we
parked there. We crossed the wooden walkway to the beach as the sun was
setting over Bradwell, with still water and many old boats in the backwater
it was stunning and I stopped to watch the sunset with the camera.
So, a top day out walking several miles enjoying the best East Anglia has
to offer – we are very lucky to live here:)
